So, in honor of Black History Month, Joshua's "group" went to the Mosaic Templars Cultural Museum in Little Rock, Arkansas.
*Now, y'all, this is not meant to be mean-spirited in any way. People with Down Syndrome are very honest and call things as they see them, even if it's not always the most "politically correct" way of speaking. Joshua's "group" is diverse, not only in terms of abilities and challenges...or labels...they are also diverse when it comes to race. But they don't see it that way. They are friends. They are family. I so appreciate Mrs. Sherrie and the leaders of the Therapeudic Recreation program for expanding the thoughts, minds and ideas of the participants.*
At the museum, the group got to see and learn about prominent African-Americans, from former Arkansas Razorback Basketball player, Derek Fisher, to our nation's President, Barack Obama.
**Side Note** Apparently this trip totally reinforced Joshua's opinion that when it comes to bald...Black is beautiful.
He said, "Black men look better bald than white men do."
Me: "oh really?" (because what are you supposed to say to something like that?)
Joshua: "Yes. Mike Anderson (Arkansas' Basketball Coach) looks GOOD bald."
Me: (again) "oh really?"
Joshua: "Yes, (and at this point he gets his fingers ready to count them off) there's Mike Anderson, Samuel L. Jackson, Michael Jordan, Mace Windu, George Foreman...
(Wait...what? Mace Windu?)
He continues, "...all Black men, all look good bald. White men, NO...
Except for Paul Williams (church minister). He looks good bald. But I hope Clay Steelman (church minister) never goes bald, because that would NOT be pretty."
Tell us how you really feel, Joshua.
But the best quote of the day came back at the museum when Joshua came into a room that had a large picture of former President Bill Clinton on the wall. Joshua: "what's HE doing in here? He's not even BLACK!"
"Jesus said, 'Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.'" Matthew 19:14
